Aleksander Aamodt Kilde earned back-to-back victories at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup in Beaver Creek with the Norwegian triumphing in the opening downhill event.

Kilde had celebrated his first World Cup win since returning from an anterior cruciate ligament yesterday, when he earned victory in the super-G competition.

The 29-year-old, who was the overall World Cup champion in 2020, produced another storming run today at the Birds of Prey course in Colorado.

Kilde completed the downhill course in a time of 1min 39.63sec to secure victory.

Austria’s Matthias Mayer went closest to the time as he sought to add to his downhill World Cup win at Lake Louise last week.

The Sochi 2014 Olympic champion was left settling for second place, ending 0.66sec adrift of the winner.

Mayer was the only skier to be within 1sec of Kilde.

Switzerland’s Beat Feuz completed the top three in a time of 1:40.64, finishing 1.01 behind Kilde.

Matteo Marsaglia and Dominik Paris of Italy placed in the top five, clocking 1:40.83 and 1:40.86 respectively.

The downhill World Cup standings are led by Mayer, who has earned 180 points across the two races.

Kilde lies second on 129 points, but could close the gap tomorrow with the second downhill race in Beaver Creek set to take place.

Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt retains the overall World Cup lead on 346 points, followed by Mayer and Kilde on 310 and 229 respectively.
