Medvedev and Rublev have proved a formidable force in the tournament, winning five of their six singles matches to guide the team into the last four.

World number five Rublev improved that record further by dispatching Dominik Koepfer in the opening singles rubber.

Rublev broke in the third game of the contest at the Madrid Arena en route to winning the opening set 6-4.

His dominance grew throughout the match with three consecutive breaks of serve in the second set, wrapping up a 6-4, 6-0 win in less than 50 minutes.

US Open champion Medvedev sealed victory for the RTF by overcoming Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets.

Medvedev broke Struff’s serve in the penultimate game of the first set, before holding impressively to take the opener 6-4.

The world number two established a 3-2 advantage in the second set, before his progress was briefly halted by a nosebleed.

Medvedev returned and continued to hold serve as he closed in on victory.

Medvedev fended off Struff’s first break point of the contest when serving for the match, as he sealed a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

The result saw the RTF advance to the Davis Cup final prior to the doubles dead-rubber.

Germany ended their participation on a high as Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz won the doubles match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 against Karen Khachanov and Aslan Karatsev.

The RTF will face Croatia in the final, after they overcame rivals Serbia 2-1 in yesterday’s semi-final match.

The "neutral" RTF team is competing under that banner as Russia's name, flag and anthem remain banned from major international events under World Anti-Doping Agency and Court of Arbitration for Sport sanctions imposed on the country.

The sanctions were imposed in response to the manipulation of Moscow Laboratory data and cover-up of a state-sponsored doping programme.
