Fourteen women’s and men’s teams have qualified for the 3x3 basketball competition at next year’s Commonwealth Games here in Birmingham, it has been announced.

England have gained entry as hosts, while Australia qualified directly after winning basketball gold in both the men’s and women’s events at Gold Coast 2018.

The women’s draw also features regional qualifiers Kenya, Canada, Sri Lanka, Saint Lucia and New Zealand.

The men’s line-up consists of Kenya, Canada, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago and New Zealand along with England and Australia.

A European qualification tournament featuring hosts Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is scheduled to be held in Paisley on December 28, with the winners securing the final spot in the men’s and women’s events.

The 3x3 discipline is set to make its first appearance at the Commonwealth Games after making its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.

The traditional five-a-side format of the sport has featured at Melbourne 2006 and Gold Coast 2018.

Australia, Canada and New Zealand will be among the favourites in the men’s competition, with hosts England determined to be in the mix for a medal.

A British team made up of England players was a surprise package at this year's International Basketball Federation 3x3 Europe Cup qualifier in Romania.

The 12th seeds upset higher-ranked Hungary 18-9 as they went on to finish fifth.

England’s women’s team also made an impressive run at the event in Romania but will face strong challenges from Australia and Canada in Birmingham.

The 3x3 competitions at Birmingham 2022 are due to be held from July 29 and August 2 next year in Smithfield.
