A quartet of Brazilian players have progressed to the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Pan American Championships semi-finals as the opening weekend came to a close in Lima in Peru.

World number six Hugo Calderano of Brazil beat Puerto Rican Brian Afanador with ease in the men's singles at the Villa Deportiva Nacional.

The 2017 champion suffocated his opponents attack to pull off the 11-5, 9-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-6, winning 26 of Afanador's 42 serves.

Calderano's compatriot and defending champion Vitor Ishiy pulled off a remarkable 4-3 comeback victory against Alberto Mino of Ecuador.

The 26-year-old found himself 3-1 down and on the brink of elimination before an inspiring final three games gave him the 8-11, 11-5, 3-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-9 win.

Canada's Eugene Wang also advanced in to the final four with a 4-0 whitewash of Puerto Rico's Daniel Gonzalez, 11-8, 11-4, 11-3, 11-3, while Paraguay's Marcelo Aguirre completed the line-up with a 4-2 defeat of Eric Jouti.

Calderano is set to meet Ishiy in the semi-finals in an all-Brazilian clash tomorrow while Aguirre and Wang will also go head-to-head for a place in the final.

There was further joy in store for Brazil in the women's singles as Bruna Takahashi dispatched Melanie Diaz of Puerto Rico with ease 11-8, 11-8, 11-9, 11-2.

She began and finished the tie capitalising on momentum, stringing six consecutive points together in games one and four.

Another Brazilian, Caroline Kumahara beat America's Sarah Jalli 4-1 in a commanding performance.

Jalli's United States team-mate Lily Zhang, winner of the 2019 title, fared better as she cruised past Chile's Pauline Vega 4-1.

Puerto Rican Adriana Diaz also comfortably made it to the semi-finals with a 4-0 crushing of Ivy Liao of Canada as she looks to recreate her gold medal-winning performances from 2017 and 2018.

There is potential for Takahashi and Kumahara to meet in the women's singles final as they have been drawn against Zhang and Diaz in the next round, respectively.
