Spain’s Paula Badosa remains top of Group Chichén Itzá after a hard-fought win over Greece’s Maria Sakkari on the fourth day of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Finals in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The day’s opening round-robin singles match saw Badosa, who won ten straight games on her way to beating Aryna Sabalenka, the top seeded Belarusian, in her opening match of the event, claim another scalp of a higher seeded player to move on to two wins.

Badosa triumphed 7-6, 6-4 against Sakkari, the first Greek player to reach the season-ending event, who now has one win and one defeat from her two matches.

Badosa’s victory in just over two hours means she has now won her last eight matches on the WTA Tour.

Sakkari battled back from 5-2 down in the opening set to force a tie-break, which Badosa claimed after a strong start saw her open a 4-0 lead.

Badosa broke early in set two but after being pegged back broke at 4-4 and served out the match, securing the win with a crosscourt backhand winner on her third match point.

Belarusian world number two Aryna Sabalenka took advantage of a raucous crowd to mount an inspired comeback against Poland's Iga Świątek, winning 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

The win moves Sabalenka to 1-1 in the Chichén Itzá group and eliminated Świątek's chances to advance.

Sabalenka will face number four seed Sakkari in the final round-robin match tomorrow, with the winner joining group winner Badosa in the semi-finals.

In the day's opening doubles match, top seeds Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková of the Czech Republic registered their second win of the event, moving to the top of the group thanks to an impressive 6-3, 6-1 triumph against Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei and Belgium's Elise Mertens.
