A student who helped out at the World Wheelchair Curling Championship in Beijing is hoping to secure a place on the volunteer programme for the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympic Games in the Chinese capital.

Wang Yijia, who led one of the volunteer teams at the event, told Chinese official state news agency Xinhua that working on the Championship at the National Aquatic Centre - a Beijing 2022 test event - was a "valuable experience".

Beijing 2022 organisers claim more than one million people applied to volunteer at the Olympics and Paralympics.

Nearly 20,000 have been enrolled as part of the recruitment process, which is approaching completion.

At the World Wheelchair Curling Championship, volunteers including Wang performed tasks such as cleaning stones before handing them to the athletes and assisted the referee in collecting invalid stones at the end of the rink.

They were also responsible for wiping the wheelchairs of the athletes before each event to ensure the fairness of the competition.

"Although we are tired every day, and our legs are sore, we learn a lot and can always feel the warmth of the staff, athletes and our teammates," Wang told Xinhua.

"The Russian athletes give us candies after the match.

"Swedish athletes say, 'Perfect, thank you' when we put the curling stones in order, and Chinese athletes often remind us to take a break.

"This is a valuable experience for me as a college student.

"It would be my great honour to be an Olympic volunteer to emphasise my dedication to the Olympic spirit."

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics are due to be held from February 4 to 22, before the Winter Paralympics take place between March 4 and 13.
