Burundi's Rodrigue Kwizera and Lucy Mawia of Kenya both won their respective races by seven seconds at the World Athletics Cross Country Tour in Soria in Spain.

Kwizera, who finished 11th in the 2019 World Athletics Cross Country Championships, stormed across the line to record a winning time of 28 minutes 57 seconds in the men's 10 kilometres contest.

The unrelated Ugandan duo of Thomas and Joel Ayeko then followed behind in 29:04 and 29:12 respectively to claim silver and bronze.

Kwizera's compatriot Thierry Ndikumwenayo was tipped to perform well as he was a top-10 finisher at the most recent World Cross Country Championships.

However, he fell short of expectations coming 12th in 30:35.

A total of 28 out of the 35 entrants were representing the home country, with Nassim Hassaous producing the quickest performance in 29:57 to finish fourth.

Mawia recorded her second win of the year in the women's 8km race following a gold medal in the 5km event in the Italian city of Arezzo.

The 23-year-old pipped Ethiopian Likina Amebaw to the finish with a 27:22 run.

Burundi's Francine Niyomukunzi was unable to replicate her form from the win in Amorebieta last week as she trailed behind in 28:11 but still managed to win bronze to ensure an all-African podium.

The next gold competition on the World Athletics Cross Country Tour will see runners return to Spain at the 17th Cross de Atapuerca in Castile and León, scheduled for November 14.
