An agreement has been signed to explore developing a vertiport network in time for the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

SEA Milan Airports has signed a partnership with vertiport owner and operator Skyports, to explore developing and operating a network of vertiports across the country, as reported by Future Travel Experience.

A vertiport is an area for advanced air mobility (AAM) aircraft to take off and land, with AAM a form of air transportation using electric vertical take off and landing, which allows people and items to be moved between places not easily served by other aviation modes.

As part of the partnership SEA Milan Airports and Skyports are set to explore deploying vehicle-agnostic, scalable and cost-effective vertiports across Milan and the surrounding region.

Areas where AAM could be used have been identified, and the organisations are hopeful of establishing commercial operations in time for Milan-Cortina 2026, scheduled from February 6 to 22 2026.

Chief executive and founder of Skyports Duncan Walker said: "I’m really excited about this partnership.

"Milan is a central business hub for Italy’s northern region which makes it an attractive market for advanced air mobility applications.

"Our plans are to have a number of operational vertiports across Italy by the mid-2020s in time for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

"SEA Milano is the ideal partner for delivering on our strategy in Italy."
