Canada Basketball has mutually agreed to end Lisa Thomaidis' contract as head coach of the women's national team.

The governing body has parted ways with Thomaidis, who led the Canadian team at this year's Olympic Games in Tokyo, two days before her tenure had been due to expire.

The 49-year-old guided Canada to gold at the 2015 Pan American Games, 2015 Americas Women's Championship and Women's AmeriCup in 2017.

Canada failed to progress to the quarter-finals at Tokyo 2020 following a chaotic build-up to the Games caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and Thomaidis has since agreed with Canada Basketball to part ways.

"Leading our Canadian senior women’s national team over the last nine years has been the highest honour and an absolute privilege," said Thomaidis, appointed head coach in 2013 following a lengthy spell as assistant head coach.

"Our accomplishments have been historic and ones that took working with a true team to achieve.

"Ultimately, I want to thank all the athletes, coaches, and staff who I had the privilege of working with over the years.

"It will be the relationships formed and connections made along this journey that I will always cherish.

"Through everyone’s passion and dedication, we elevated our program to where it is today.

"As I step aside, I do so with immense pride and satisfaction knowing that I gave everything I had to the programme."

Denise Dignard, general manager and executive vice-president of women's high performance at Canada Basketball, said it was the right time for a change.

"After careful consideration and discussion with Lisa, we both recognise that this is a necessary step that our programme must make in our continued pursuit of a place on the podium at the highest of international competitions, as well as for Lisa, both personally and professionally," said Dignard.
