Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of Egypt, honoured the country's seven medallists from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games at the Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo.

El-Sisi presented the athletes and their coaches with national medals of sport.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, Minister of Sport Ashraf Sobhi and President of the Egyptian Paralympic Committee Hayat Khattab were in attendance.

Mohamed El-Zayat won silver in the men's 61-kilogram taekwondo competition and was awarded a second-class medal of sport by the President.

Technical director Mahmoud Abdel Gawad and coach Hani Ali also received second-class medals.

El-Sisi then granted the same honour to powerlifters Sherif Othman, Mahmoud Mohamed, Rehab Ahmed and Fatma Omar, who all won silver medals in Japan.

Similarly, head of the technical body for powerlifting Mahmoud Nabil, women's technical director Shaaban Yehia, men’s technical director Emad El-Din Bahgat, women’s coach Sherif Hassan and men’s coach Abdel Moneim Salah were granted second-class medals.

Bronze winners Mohamed Elelfat and Hany Abdelhady received third-class medals of sport from El-Sisi.

He praised the Paralympians by saying that they had gained the respect and appreciation of the Egyptian people before requesting they receive the same amount of support in the build up to the Paris 2024 Games.

Appearing in the Paralympics for the 13th time, Egypt was represented by 49 competitors in eight sports in the Japanese capital.

Despite taking its largest athlete delegation ever, Egypt produced its worst medal haul - five silver and two bronze medals - since the country's first Paralympic appearance in 1972.
