The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) aims to support National Federations and ensure "good governance" throughout the country's sporting organisations.

As part of Agenda 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has stressed the importance of transparency, anti-doping and effective and clear governance.

The Olympic and Sport Movement Congress Recommendation 41 says that "all members of the Olympic Movement should adopt, as their minimum standard, the basic universal principles of good governance of the Olympic Movement, as proposed by the IOC."

The FASANOC now says it wants to support National Federations in their attempts to meet the IOC's demands.

"Our mission covers this, which is 'To develop, protect and promote sports participation and excellence for all the people of Fiji'," said FASANOC chief executive Lorraine Mar.

"The IOC and FASANOC strive to have athletes at the heart of all activities."

The FASANOC delivers Oceania Sports Education Programmes, which aim to educate governing bodies on topics such as administration, management, training and governance.

"We encourage National Federations to get athletes and sports administrators to take advantage of the many OS (Oceania Sports) programs that will soon be available," Mar continued.

Mar said the FASANOC will provide initiatives such as the International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Program - which aims to develop world-class coaches - and the Executive Masters in Sport Organisations Management scheme, which will teach sport governance skills.

The Voice of the Athletes programme, which "uses national sporting champions to advocate on the Olympic Values at all their sessions with communities with emphasis on clean and safe sport," is also available for National Federations to use, Mar added.

The FASANOC also encouraged all athletes and officials to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to aid the return to sport following the pandemic.

Fijian athletes have struggled to participate in international events due to strict travel restrictions in New Zealand and Australia, where long-distance flights to the rest of the world depart from.

The issues resulted in Fiji and Papa New Guinea being the only two Pacific nations to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
