France’s Axel Mazella and Poema Newland were crowned winners at the International Kiteboarding Association Formula Kite European Championships in Montpellier.

Both Mazella and Newland finished second in the men’s and women’s events respectively, but were the top-ranked Europeans with competition having been open to kiteboarders from other nations, so take home continental honours.

Singapore’s Maximilian Maeder enjoyed a successful 15th birthday, after topping the standings in the men’s competition.

Maeder had required three race wins to overtake Mazella in the standings.

The teenager achieved the feat to to win the open competition, marking his maiden event triumph.

Mazella finished as the runner-up in the open event, while leading a French clean sweep of the European Championships podium.

He had enjoyed a successful week on the water by topping the standings in the eight-race opening series, which saw him directly advance to the final.

Mazella claimed his third consecutive European Championship title in front of compatriot Benoit Gomez, who settled for second place.



An all-French podium was completed by Maxime Nocher.

The women’s open event saw Daniela Moroz live up to expectations as the favourite, with the American having proved dominant throughout the event.

Newland had advanced to the four-woman final after finishing top of her semi-final standings, after recording two victories.

She settled for second behind Moroz in the open event, which was enough to secure the European title.

Her team mate Lauriane Nolot ended as the silver medallist, with Alexia Fancelli completing an all-French podium in the event.
