Second seed Daniil Medvedev advanced to the US Open men’s singles semi-finals after ending the run of Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp in New York City, and will face Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last four.

Medvedev was seeking to advance to the last four for the third consecutive year at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Russian made a strong start on Arthur Ashe Stadium, breaking serve three times to take the opening set 6-3.

Van de Zandschulp was playing his eighth match of the tournament after coming through qualifying, with the schedule and his five-set match in the fourth round appearing to take its toll.

The 25-year-old had no answer to Medvedev in the second set, with the world number two winning six consecutive games in just 19 minutes to take a two-set lead.

Van de Zandschulp received a medical timeout after the set and responded impressively in the third.

He broke Medvedev’s serve for a 3-2 lead and held serve under pressure to extend his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final appearance into a fourth set.

The set was the first lost by Medvedev at this year’s tournament.

A close fourth set remained on serve until the latter stages, with Van de Zandschulp successfully fending off a match point when serving at 5-4 down.

His resistance was eventually ended by Medvedev, who earned two match points on his opponent’s next service game and took the first to clinch a 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 victory.

Medvedev has now reached three consecutive semi-finals at the US Open, suffering defeat in 2019 and reaching the final last year.

He is hoping to clinch a maiden Grand Slam title, after being beaten by Austria’s Dominic Thiem in 2020 and losing the Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final earlier this year.

Medvedev is now set to face Auger-Aliassime, the 12th seed, in the last four.

Auger-Aliassime reached his maiden Grand Slam semi-final having taken the first set and a two-game lead in the second set before his Spanish opponent Carlos Alcaraz retired.

The Canadian becomes his country’s first representative in the US Open men’s singles semi-finals and, aged 21, the youngest player to reach that stage since 2009.

The 18-year-old Alcaraz had beaten third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece en route to becoming the youngest player for more than three decades to reach a quarter-final of a Grand Slam in the men’s singles.

However, he retired trailing 6-3, 3-1 with an injury to his right adductor.

Auger-Aliassime is likely to face his toughest test yet against Medvedev in the semi-finals, and believes he will have to be on top of his game in order to progress.

"He’s one of the best players on hard courts right now," the world number 15 commented.

"Especially here, he loves playing here.

"I need to play my best tennis, I need to serve well again, I need to come in behind my shots, put pressure on him, mix things up also."

The remaining two quarter-finals are scheduled for tomorrow.

They are due to feature Germany’s Olympic champion Alexander Zverev against South Africa’s Lloyd Harris, and world number one Djokovic, who continues his bid for a calendar Grand Slam against Italy’s Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini.
