Competition is open for the right to reconstruct the Kalininets sports complex for the Yekaterinburg 2023 Summer World University Games.

Applications for the contract to upgrade the complex are open until August 11, with a starting price set at RUB2.5 billion (£2.45 billion/$3.39 billion/€2.87 billion), as reported by TASS, Russia’s official state news agency.

The rights cover the reconstruction of the athletics stadium and construction of an additional administrative and amenity complex.

The Kalininets venue is due to stage track and field competition.

It was upgraded in advance of the 2018 FIFA World Cup to host training, but further improvements are need to meet International University Sports Federation and World Athletics standards.

A warm-up area and base for temporary buildings and stands will also be built.

The Kalininets complex is in the Ordzhonikidze district of Yekaterinburg.

The 2023 Summer World University Games are scheduled to take place in the city from August 8 to 19.

A total of 247 medals are expected to be awarded across 18 sports.
