More than 60,000 fans will be allowed to attend the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium in London, according to the United Kingdom Government.

This means the stadium will be at 75 per cent of its 90,000 person capacity.

The increase will also see the largest crowds assembled for a sporting event in the UK in more than 15 months.

"It is great news that so many fans will be able to watch the final three matches of Euro 2020 at Wembley," said UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.

The UK Government has postponed lifting all restrictions until July 19, but the game at Wembley will receive exemption alongside other sporting events, under the Events Research Programme.

This makes it a test event as the Government looks to see a return to sporting events with crowds.

For the group fixtures at the tournament, Wembley has been capped at 22,500, but it set to be expanded to 45,000 for two knockout games in the last 16 before the semi-finals on July 6 and 7 and the final on July 11.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi called for the final to be moved from England due to rising COVID-19 cases, but UEFA stated it had "no plans" to do so.

On Thursday (July 17), the UK reported 11,007 cases of COVID-19 - the highest since February 19.

The UK has reported 27 deaths today related to the coronavirus - the highest since May 5.

"This tournament has been a beacon of hope to reassure people that we are returning to a more normal way of life and this is a further step along that road," added Čeferin.

"I am grateful to the Prime Minister and the UK Government for their hard work in finalising these arrangements with us, to make the tournament final stages a great success in Wembley."

Fans attending games will need to have a negative COVID-19 test or proof of full vaccination, which means two vaccine doses, 14 days before the fixture they are attending.
