Lucerne 2021's volunteer recruitment campaign is now accepting international applications, organisers have said.

The move follows the opening of the registration process for people in host nation Switzerland earlier this month.

It is hoped that 3,800 volunteers will be recruited for the event - which is scheduled to take place between December 11 and 21.

This is nearly a year later than planned after the COVID-19 pandemic forced a move from the original January slot.

Potential volunteers have been told that taking a role would "offer a glimpse behind the scenes at a huge sporting event".

Developing "a large international network of new contacts" is seen as another plus.

"A sports event of this magnitude depends on the commitment of the volunteers, who also play a very important role as a link to our guests from over 50 nations," said Lucerne 2021 managing director Urs Hunkeler.

"After all the things we have missed out on in recent times, volunteering at the Lucerne 2021 Winter Universiade is a great opportunity to put yourself back at the heart of the action and experience all of the emotions up close."

Lucerne 2021's head of volunteers Giuliana Schmid previously said that a series of "diverse" roles would be on offer to people who want to work at the Universiade.

It is also possible to register as a "long-term" volunteer for a small salary.

Anyone who works for more than five days at the event will be able to keep their uniform as a souvenir.
