Milwaukee has been chosen to host the United States speed skating trials for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.

US Speedskating said the event would be held at Pettit National Ice Center from January 5 to 9.

The competition will be used to determine the speed skaters who will represent the US at Beijing 2022.

The venue also held the US Olympic trials prior to the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, which US Speedskating executive director Ted Morris said was a factor in awarding it the event.

"We are thrilled to have the city of Milwaukee and the Pettit National Ice Center host the 2022 U.S. Olympic Trials - long track speedskating," Morris said.

"With the tremendous success of the 2018 Olympic Trials held at the Pettit, this was an easy decision for US Speedskating.

"We had a completely sold-out venue, incredible enthusiasm from the local community, and exciting racing from the skaters in 2018.

"We anticipate similar results next January."

Speed skating is the US' most successful event at the Winter Olympics.

The country has won a total of 68 medals in the sport at the Games, 29 of which were gold.

The National Speed Skating Oval is set to stage speed skating events at Beijing 2022, due to open on February 4 and close on February 20.
