Second seed Daniil Medvedev and fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas both suffered surprise defeats during the third round of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Masters 1000 Madrid Open at the Caja Magica.

Russian Medvedev was beaten in three sets by Chile’s Cristian Garin, the 16th seed, 6-4 6-7 6-1 in a contest that lasted two and a half hours.

Greek player Tsitsipas was also the victim of an upset in the Spanish capital as he lost in two tight sets to Norway’s Casper Ruud, with the world number 22 claiming one of the biggest wins of his career as he emerged victorious 7-6 6-4.

The other top ten seed eliminated today was sixth seed Andrey Rublev of Russia who lost 7-6 3-6 7-6 to John Isner of the United States.

Men’s top seed Rafael Nadal of Spain enjoyed another straightforward victory on his home clay courts, triumphing 6-3 6-3 against Australian qualifier Alexei Popyrin.

Third seed Dominic Thiem of Austria won in two close sets 7-6 6-4 against Australia’s Alex de Minaur while fifth seed Alex Zverev of Germany overcame Britain’s Dan Evans in straight sets 6-3 7-6.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 tournament, being held simultaneously at the complex, reached the semi-final stage today.

Both seeded players enjoyed straight sets wins with top seed Ashleigh Barty of Australia winning 6-4 6-3 against home player Paula Badosa during the day session.

The evening session saw fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament, keep that record intact as she won 6-2 6-3 against Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Barty will now face Sabalenka in the final in Madrid on Saturday (May 8), a repeat of the final from the WTA tournament in Stuttgart two weeks ago, which Barty won in three sets.
