Olympic Federation of Ireland (OFI) chief executive Peter Sherrard suggested the organisation may move to the Sport Ireland campus in Abbotstown this year.

The OFI headquarters is currently located in Howth, an outer suburb of Dublin.

Plans to move to Abbotstown on the other side of the capital are accelerating, however, with Sport Ireland set to present its new campus masterplan next month.

Sherrard told The Times that the growing relationship between the OFI and Sport Ireland was one of the main reasons behind the proposed move.

"We are increasingly working together very closely, and it is a very good and strong relationship, as it always should have been," he said.

Sherrard also suggested the sale of the current OFI headquarters could be carried out this year.

"I think this year if we can, but there’s a few bits that have to fall into place," he said.

The OFI confirmed to insidethegames that the move to Abbotstown "is an avenue that we are currently exploring."

The OFI is currently preparing for Ireland's 22nd appearance at a Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo this year.

The country earned two silver medals at Rio 2016.

This followed on from the record six Olympic medals won at London 2012, including Katie Taylor's gold medal in the women's lightweight boxing contest.
