The inaugural edition of the Baseball5 World Cup will take place in 2022, the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has announced.

It was hoped to stage the maiden competition this year but that proved impossible due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Plans have now been revealed to hold the World Cup - a mixed gender event - in even years starting from the 2022 edition.

In addition, the Baseball5 Youth World Cup, for players aged between 14 and 18, will take place in odd years starting from 2023.

The 2025 tournament will serve as a qualifier for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Senegal's capital Dakar, after the street discipline earned a place on the sports programme.

Dakar was initially due to host the Games in 2022 but a four-year delay was approved by the International Olympic Committee in July.

Baseball5 is an urban discipline which is increasingly being championed by the WBSC.

Only a rubber ball is needed for the sport which is said to bring baseball to previously inaccessible areas.

Any playing surface can be utilised and no pitcher is needed, with hitting done by hand.

Five-inning games are played with five active players per team.

"The revised calendar follows extensive consultations with potential hosts, Member Federations and Continental Associations, and provides the opportunity for continental qualifiers to played in 2021-2022, in what has already been flagged as a busy baseball, softball, baseball5 competition period for federations, ahead of the first Baseball5 World Cup in 2022," the WBSC said.

"The baseball5 international calendar includes the Baseball5 World Cup, played on even years, and the Youth Baseball5 World Cup, for the 14 to 18 age bracket, played on odd years.

"The events will happen on a two-year cycle."

Members of the WBSC events department and the WBSC integrity unit will now work on hosting manuals and bidding documents for potential future hosts.
