Alexx the Axolotl has been chosen as official mascot for next month's United Through Sports (UTS) International Virtual Youth Festival.

The mascot was designed by Transcend Studio animator Oscar Feliz, who wanted to ensure "the spirit of Alexx, and his positive nature were at the centre" of his design.

Alexx, who has purposefully been given a unisex name, is portrayed as being a happy, friendly and fun-loving creature who wants to encourage the world to be more inclusive and accepting of diversity.

An axolotl amphibian was chosen as mascot due to the ability of the endangered species to show resilience and regenerate whole limbs, parts of the brain and segments of spinal cord.

The animal is also considered to have cute and young-looking features.

Set to be broadcast online, the International Virtual Youth Festival will bring Olympic and non-Olympic sports together under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), International Paralympic Committee, Special Olympics, SportAccord and the Global Association of International Sports Federations.

It aims to increase youth participation in sport.

Educational programmes and online discussions will precede a hybrid online and in-person event in Thailand to mark the United Nations' World Children's Day between November 20 and 22.

More than 60 organisations have worked together to bring a digital platform to qualification events held over the past two months.
