The Winter Classic in the Czech Republic is set to include Para-ice hockey for the first time later this year, with the Czech and Slovakian national teams due to play on the final day of the event.

The two sides are scheduled to face off in an open-air game on December 12.

As well as Para-ice hockey, the festival of ice hockey will include duels between junior teams and a National Hockey League (NHL) legends side.

Those poised to play for the ex-NHL side include former Pittsburgh Penguins winger Jaromír Jágr, ex-Winnipeg Jets goalie Ondřej Pavelec and former Los Angeles Kings winger Ziggy Pálffy.

The Winter Classic will take place on a prepared ice rink in Špindlerův Mlýn, marking the first time the festival will be hosted in the mountains.

The proposed venue is just below the area's ski slopes.

"The boys are really looking forward to the match in such an amazing place and in the open air," Czech Para-ice hockey coach Jiri Briza said.

"We will meet the Slovak team on the ice, which will be interesting for the spectators as well.

"It is great that Para-ice hockey will appear at this event alongside the best domestic hockey stars and teams."

The Czech Republic hosted the last edition of the World Para Ice Hockey Championships in Ostrava in 2019, with the hosts finishing fourth.

Slovakia also made history last year by qualifying for the World Championships for the first time.

"Para-ice hockey in Slovakia was created just 10 years ago, and we created all our knowledge from the Czechs," Miroslav Dra, general manager of the Slovakia para-ice hockey team, said.

"Also, 90 per cent of our boys played in the Czech league, so it will also be this magnificent celebration and presentation of Czech para-ice hockey."
