United States Olympic trials for Tokyo 2020 in rowing and wrestling have been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The two events had been scheduled to take place over the next month.

The US Olympic trials in rowing were due to be held in Sarasota in Florida next week, while wrestling had been set for early April.

A qualifier for the Olympic trials in diving has also been postponed.

Organisers of the Olympic trials for track and field in the US, scheduled for Oregon in June, are proceeding with preparations as planned and are hopeful the event can be staged.

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has cancelled its 100 Day Out event in Times Square in New York City on April 15 due to concerns over the COVID-19 virus.

It comes amid a wider ban on all Team USA fan events through to the end of April.

USOPC chief executive Sarah Hirshland said the organisation was in contact with national governing bodies (NGBs) who have had to postpone trials for Tokyo 2020 because of the virus, which has infected 2,340 people and killed 51 in the US.

According to latest figures, 5,617 deaths have been reported from the virus worldwide, while over 150,000 have been infected.

"We are committed to working with the NGBs as they make decisions about their events, and determine appropriate next steps related to team trials," Hirshland said.

"In light of the changing event schedules, both internationally and domestically, we are working directly with athletes and NGB representatives to maintain fair and transparent team selection processes for Tokyo.

"It remains our great hope that Team USA athletes - having dedicated an incalculable amount of time and effort in the hope of representing the United States in the Olympic and Paralympic Games - will have the opportunity to live out their athletic dreams in Tokyo.

"Rest assured we will continue to take every precaution necessary to ensure the health and safety of Team USA athletes and the communities we call home.

"That is our commitment - and it will be reflected in every decision we make."
