The International Ski Federation (FIS) have revealed a decision will be made on the status of their Alpine Ski World Cup Finals in Cortina d'Ampezzo on Friday (March 6), amid concerns over the spread of the coronavirus.

The FIS Council held an emergency conference call yesterday, where the status of the finals was the key topic discussed.

The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Finals are currently due to be held from March 16 to 22 at the Italian resort.

"The health and welfare of the athletes and all other participants, as well as the general public are in the forefront and the priority of FIS," a FIS statement read.

"After a long discussion, the Council agreed with the request of the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) on the advice of the Italian Regional Government and Health Authorities in Veneto, to wait until Friday March 6 to make a final decision on the staging of the FIS Alpine World Cup Finals in Cortina.

"This is also the date specified by the authorities for their next general update in regard to the status of controlling measures that have been undertaken to prevent the spread of the Novel Coronavirus and any measures that will be implemented."

Over 90,000 coronavirus cases have been reported worldwide, with 80,000 of the cases coming in China.

Italy has been the most impacted European nation by the coronavirus outbreak, with over 2,000 cases reported to date.

A total of 52 deaths from the virus have been reported in the country.

Events ranging from Serie A games to an Olympic water polo qualification tournament have had to be postponed in Italy because of restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

Italy’s away Six Nations ties against Ireland have also been postponed, but their men’s match against England in Rome is scheduled to take place as planned next weekend.

The FIS have added that other World Cup events, outside of Italy, they are fully complying with the instructions and decisions of the National and Regional Governments and their health authorities.

“Additionally, FIS remains in constant contact with the hosting National Ski Associations and Organising Committees to provide support including information about measures undertaken by other Organisers,” the FIS added.

"Should any changes to the current competition calendars be necessary as a result of measures imposed by national and regional Governments, they will be announced as any decisions are made."
