Spanish kata stars Damian Quintero and Sandra Sanchez opted to use different routines but achieved familiar results as the duo claimed gold medals at the Karate 1-Premier League in Dubai.

Sanchez decided to use a “kishimoto no kushanku” routine in the women’s final against United States’ Sakura Kokumai.

The world champion was rewarded for her performance as she clinched a second gold of the Karate 1-Premier League season with a score of 27.54.

Kokumai was forced to settle for second place on 25.82.

“It has been a very emotional moment for me,” Kokumai said.

“I have been working in this Kata for the past two years, and we were waiting for the right moment to present it in competition.

“Finally, this moment came today, and I had a mix of emotions.

“I was nervous about performing the new kata in the final, but I felt good and everything went well.”

World Championship silver medallist Quintero opted to use a chatanyara kushanku kata routine in the men’s final, which saw him clinch victory on 27.26 points.

Venezuela’s Antonio Diaz finished as the runner-up on 26.08.

World champion Angelo Crescenzo emerged as the winner of the men’s under-60-kilogram kumite competition, as the Italian secured a 2-0 win over Kazakhstan’s Darkhan Assadilov.

France’s Steven Dacosta was another world champion to enjoy success at the Al Wasl Club.

Dacosta delivered an exciting performance against Brazil’s Vinicius Figueira in a repeat of the 2018 men’s under-67kg kumite World Championship final.

The French star clinched a 6-0 victory.

Turkey’s Serap Ozcelik Arapoglu maintained her recent winning run in the women’s under-50kg division.

She earned a third gold medal in three competitions this season by emerging as a 5-2 winner against Spain’s Nadia Gomez Morales.

Ukraine’s Anzhelika Terliuga won the women’s under-55kg final with a narrow 1-0 triumph against Egypt’s Yassim Attia.

China’s Xiaoyan Yin upgraded from her silver medal at the Karate 1-Premier League event in Paris.

She won the women’s under-61kg title, courtesy of a 3-1 win over Iran’s Shima Alessadi.

Xiaoyan’s team-mate Li Gong won China’s second gold of the day by beating Egypt’s Feryal Abdelaziz 3-0 in the women’s under-68kg division.

Turkey’s Meltem Hocaoglu Akyol won the heavyweight women’s over 68kg event by beating Egypt’s Shymaa Abouel Yazed 2-1.

Azerbaijan’s Rafael Aghayev overcame Italy’s Luigi Busa 3-2 in the men’s under-75kg final, while Iran’s Zabiollah Poorshab won 8-5 against Kazakhstan’s Daniyar Yuldashev in an entertaining under-84kg final.

Germany’s world champion Jonathan Horne was awarded gold in the men’s over-84kg kumite competition by the officials, after his bout with Georgia’s Gogita Arkania ended 1-1.
