University and Tertiary Sport NZ (UTSNZ) has announced its 2020 calendar of events for the National Tertiary Championship.

Ten sports are included with results from each event combining to crown an overall champion.

The New Zealand University Rowing Championship has been included for the first time and will be the first event of the year, on April 10 and 11 at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel.

This will be followed by competitions in futsal, 3x3 basketball, hockey 5s, volleyball, ultimate, badminton, table tennis, 5x5 basketball and netball.

"Under the guidance of UTSNZ, the tertiary sports programme offered to New Zealand tertiary student athletes continues to grow in credibility and standard," said UTSNZ executive director Sarah Anderson.

"The continued support from national and regional sporting organisations is fantastic and more sports are now beginning to consider the pathways and products available to young people as they transition from secondary school sport."

In addition to the domestic calendar, New Zealand will also send student athletes and teams to events overseas.

They will travel to Australia, Fiji and Chinese Taipei in 2020.

Educational programmes will also take place as part of UTSNZ's affiliation to the International University Sport Federation.

"We are looking forward to another busy year," Anderson added.

"The reward is seeing this growing and multi-faceted programme of opportunities helping to meet not only the aspirations of students who wish to participate, excel and advance in national and international environments as athletes, but also those students who may be seeking a career or involvement in sport as officials, administrators, coaches and/or managers as well."
