World football’s governing body FIFA has topped the 2019 #SportOnSocial rankings table, climbing nine places from 2018.

#SportOnSocial ranks all 35 Olympic International Federations according to their performance on social media.

Every stat and result used in independent digital communications agency REDTORCH's #SportOnSocial Report, which can be viewed by clicking here, was measured from March 1, 2018 to January 31, 2019.

FIFA had significant success across all platforms, ranking first on both Instagram and YouTube, where performance in all metrics spiked during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has risen to second, one place higher than 2018, having made significant improvements on YouTube as well as ranking first on Facebook.

FIBA’s social media success has been attributed to international events, including the 2018 3x3 World Cup in Bocaue in the Philippines and the 2018 Women's Basketball World Cup in Tenerife in Spain.

The Badminton World Federation and the International Tennis Federation were the joint highest climbers, both jumping 14 places to 12th and 20th respectively.

The International Skating Union remains the highest-ranked Winter International Federation as a result of ranking second on Twitter.

Its figure skating channel saw substantial growth and engagement during the 2018 World Championships in Milan in March and the 2018-2019 Grand Prix Final in Vancouver in December.

"#SportOnSocial is our way of encouraging 'sport' to improve its performance on social media, and inspiring more people to watch, participate and compete," REDTORCH chief executive Jonny Murch said.

Last year's best-performing governing body on social media was World Rugby, followed by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and FIBA.

World Rugby has dropped to third place, while the ITTF is down to fourth.
