Mikaela Shiffrin has the chance to secure her first-ever crystal globe as overall winner of the overall Alpine Skiing World Cup giant slalom standings when she races tomorrow at the Czech resort of Špindlerův Mlýn - the last stop before the World Cup Finals in Andorra.

The 23-year-old American skier, who won giant slalom gold at last year's Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, finished third in the discipline last season, although victory in the slalom projected her to the overall World Cup title.

It would be especially significant for Shiffrin to win on these slopes where, eight years ago, she took part in her first World Cup race after taking bronze in the Junior World Championships.

On that occasion Shiffrin failed to qualify for the second runs in both competitions - but this year she returns as overall World Cup champion on the women's Alpine tour for the third successive year.

She has also won a third slalom title and a sixth in all.

A few tickets remain for tomorrow's giant slalom, while tickets for Saturday's (March 9) slalom are sold out.

Home fans will have five leading Czech contenders to cheer, including Pyeongchang Olympian Gabriela Capova.

Meanwhile the final stop on the men's World Cup tour before Andorra will be held at Kranjska Gora in Slovenia on Saturday and Sunday (March 10), featuring the slalom and giant slalom.

Overall World Cup winner Marcel Hirscher of Austria has won six times at this venue, including on five of the last six races.
