Japan picked up three golds and a silver today on a night of women's finals at the United World Wrestling World Under-23 Championships in Bucharest.

Athletes from Japan, a country renowned for their strength in women's wrestling, picked up world titles at 53 kilograms, 62kg and 65kg, while the silver came in the 57kg class at the Sala Polivalenta Bucharest Sports Hall.

In the lightest weight division of the night at 53kg Momoka Kadoya won gold, by beating Russia’s Milana Dadasheva – a senior European bronze medallist - 4-3, while the bronze medals were won by Khrystyna Bereza from Ukraine and Andreea Beatrice Ana.

The following final saw the one Japanese defeat of the night though, when Canada’s Alexandria Rebekkah Town beat Akie Hanai 7-4 in the 57kg event.

At that level the bronzes were taken by Tserenchimed Sukhee from Mongolia and Alexandra Andreeva from Russia.

At 62kg Yukako Kawai, who won senior world silver in Budapest just last month, claimed under-23 world gold with a technical superiority win over Ukraine’s Ilona Prokopevniuk 14-3, while in the 65kg class Ayana Gempei, who won senior world bronze in Budapest, claimed gold by beating Elis Manolova from Azerbaijan.

That final finished 7-3.

Meanwhile, the bronze medals in each of those categories went to Luisa Niemesch from Germany and Gantuya Enkhbat from Mongolia at 62kg and Ukraine’s Iryna Koliadenko and Russia’s Mariia Kuznetsova at 65kg.

Tomorrow will see finals take place in men’s freestyle at 57kg, 65kg, 70kg, 79kg and 97kg.
