International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup action is set to return to Park City tomorrow with the stop not having featured on last season’s calendar.

Bobsleigh and skeleton athletes last raced at the Utah Olympic Park back in January 2016, when Latvia’s Martins Dukurs and Germany’s Tina Hermann won the respective men’s and women’s skeleton competitions.

The event also saw Canada’s Kaillie Humphries claim victory in the women’s bobsleigh and the pairing of Germany’s Nico Walther and Russia’s Alexander Kasjanov triumph in the four-man bobsleigh.

This year, two races will be held in the four-man event in Park City.

A four-man bobsleigh event was scheduled to take place at the season-opening IBSF World Cup in Lake Placid last week, but it was cancelled.

This came after the Organising Committee determined that the consistency of ice conditions for racing in that discipline could not be secured due to the warm weather conditions in the days preceding the event.

As the races are part of the Olympic qualification process for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Games, the IBSF made the decision to hold two two-man races in Lake Placid and two four-man races in Park City.

Tomorrow’s schedule is made up of competition in women’s skeleton, women’s bobsleigh and the first of the four-man bobsleigh events.

On Saturday (November 18), the men’s skeleton and second four-man bobsleigh event will take centre stage.

Among those looking to make their mark in Park City is American bobsledder Justin Olsen, who, along with compatriots Nick Cunningham and Codie Bascue, performed well in the two-man opener in Lake Placid.

Olsen finished sixth with Steven Langton and third with Evan Weinstock, with the latter being his first World Cup podium.

Cunningham finished second and fourth with Ryan Bailey, while Bascue took third and first with Carlo Valdes and Samuel McGuffie respectively.

Strong results could earn the United States a third sled in each race at Pyeongchang 2018, but the three drivers are currently competing for two Olympic spots.

They will have their first four-man World Cup races in Park City.

As a push athlete, Olsen has an Olympic gold medal from Vancouver 2010 and two world titles, won in 2009 and 2012, to his name.

He now has ambitions to build a new legacy as a pilot.

"It’s my 11th year [as a bobsledder], but it’s really only my third year of driving," Olsen said.

The 2017-2018 IBSF World Cup series is made up of eight legs in total, culminating in a three-day event in Königssee in Germany from January 19 to 21.
