There are currently no details known about the athlete except for the fact that they are not from the hosts Malaysia.

A total of 11 countries competed in the biennial multi-sport event that took place between August 19 and 30 and that included 404 events in 38 sports.

The positive drugs test was confirmed by Low Beng Choo, secretary general of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).

"We're unable to give more details but I can confirm that we have our first doping case," she told the Straits Times.

"We're disappointed because we wanted this SEA Games to be free from drug cheats. 

"We're only able to release information after following all proper procedures."

Beng Choo claimed that the OCM had run a comprehensive anti-doping education programme before the start of the Games.

"We've done all we can to create awareness among our athletes through our NOC (National Olympic Committee) but we've no control over the other countries," she told the Straits Times. 

"All we know is that a medallist has tested positive for prohibited drugs based on the sample A. 

"This athlete will be given time to request for sample B and a hearing will take place after that.

"This procedure will take some time."

Malaysia finished top of the overall medals table.

They won a total of 323 medals, including 145 gold.

That left them comfortably ahead of their nearest rivals, Thailand, who won 246 medals, 72 of them gold.
