Three tournaments and an additional demonstration event have been held by the Sambo Association of Costa Rica as they seek to boost the popularity of the sport.

Three national events have been held so far this year as athletes from the nation seek to qualify for the Pan American Championships.

National Governing body President Guillermo Sanchez is particularly prioritising events aimed at students.

One exhibition-style event took place to coincide with the International Day for the Celebration of Sport for Development and Peace.

Sambo wrestlers not only "demonstrate their skills and beauty", Sanchez said, but show the need for clean sport and finding "peaceful issues through sport".

Another was held on April 8 to coincide with a day honouring Costa Rican national hero Juan Santamaría.

A Pan American Championship qualifier is scheduled for May 14.
