It came two weeks before the end of the season.

Hirscher, who also won the giant slalom title at last month's World Championships in St Moritz, finished 0.46sec clear in 2 min 24.31sec.

Leif Kristian Haugen of Norway secured second place while Matts Olsson of Sweden was third 0.67 behind.

Frenchman Alexis Pinturault was second in the giant slalom standings heading into today's race, but skied out in the first run after struggling to find any rhythm. 

It means Hirscher also guaranteed himself the giant slalom season title. 

"The conditions were not easy but I still knew I had to ski as fast as I could, pushing always at limit," Hirscher said.

"It was not easy and I am very glad to be through with it. 

"And I am super happy with the giant slalom globe. 

"It is a huge relief."

Hirscher now lies on 1,374 points in the overall standings, 504 clear of Norwegian speed specialist Kjetil Jansrud.

His sixth overall crown improved the record of Luxembourg's Marc Girardelli - who won in 1985, 1986, 1989, 1991 and 1993 -  while equalling the women's mark set by Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proll almost 40 years ago.

She won in every year from 1971 to 1975 as well as in 1979.

Sofia Goggia of Italy won the women's downhill race also held today in the South Korean resort of Jeongseon which is set to host competition during next year's Winter Olympic Games.

Her time of 1:38.80 saw her beat United States' Lindsey Vonn by just 0.07.

Slovenia's world champion Ilka Štuhec finished third in 1:39.03.
