Britain's Heather Watson continued her superb form with a tough victory over Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva today in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the first World Tour Masters event of the year.

The world number 53, winner of the Monterrey Open last week, lost the second set before fighting back to win the decider on Stadium Court.

She eventually won 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 in a match that lasted two hours and 30 minutes.

"When it was important I was able to bring out my best tennis," said the 23-year-old, who will next face 32nd seed Monica Niculescu of Romania.

There was a better result for Voskoboeva's compatriot Yulia Putintseva, who thrashed Peng Shuai of China 6-0, 6-1 in 55 minutes.

Other opening day winners included Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko, who beat Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. and Czech Republic's Lucie Hradecka, who defeated United States' Alison Riske 7-6, 6-2.

Round one of the men's singles is set to begin tomorrow following a final set of qualifying matches today.

Top-seeded players will get a bye straight through to round two in both the men's and women's singles draw.

In the latter, Romania's defending champion Simona Halep is drawn in the same quarter of the draw as world number one Serena Williams.

Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska and Belarus' Victoria Azarenka will be other leading contenders.

Novak Djokovic will be seeking to successfully defend his men's title, with his main competition set to come from Britain's world number two Andy Murray in the absence of Switzerland's Roger Federer, who is still recovering from knee surgery.

The tournament begins with the tennis world in a state of shock following Maria Sharapova admitting that she failed a doping test for meldonium during the Australian Open in January.
