American duo Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed are the new leaders of the US Open after both produced excellent displays on day two, while 14-time major winner Tiger Woods missed the cut on 16-over-par at Chambers Bay.

Spieth, who claimed a stunning victory at the Masters in Augusta in April, shot a 67 to move to five-under-par.

He remains on course to join fellow American Gene Sarazen as one of the only two 21-year-olds in the history of the game to win more than one major thanks to a round which included four birdies in the opening eight holes.

Reed also enjoyed a successful round as he managed a 69 to ensure he and Spieth shared the clubhouse lead, one shot ahead of nearest challengers Dustin Johnson of America and South African Branden Grace.

Swede Stenson, the joint-leader along with Johnson after day one, endured a tricky round out on the course as he could only manage a four-over 74, although his performance hasn’t thrown him out of contention for the title just yet.

Much like the first day though, Woods is the name everyone is talking about and for all the wrong reasons as he missed the cut for only the fifth time in 86 major appearances.

While his six-over-par was a marked improvement from yesterday’s abysmal 80, the three-time US Open champion still hit eight bogeys on his way to not making the third day at the tournament for the first time since 2006.

“On golf courses like this you get exposed and you have to be precise and dialled in,” the 39-year-old said.

“I hit it a little bit better but again I made nothing.

“I didn't make any putts the first two days.

"I need to get a little better for the Open and I'll keep working at it.”

Woods joins a notable list of high-profile names to follow him out of the exit door by missing the cut as that fate also befell two-time major winner Martin Kaymer of Germany, American Bubba Watson and Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell.

World number one Rory McIlroy however managed to survive by the skin of his teeth although he is nine shots off the pace.
