22:28 A lot was happening away from the sporting action today as well: that mad press conference with Usain Bolt that at times resembled more of a media love in than a press grilling.

We also had "Clyde-gate" as Glasgow 2014, with a little help from insidethegames, rectifying the problems with scanning QR codes in its mascot trail.

And we are also quite proud we managed to link in both Billy Ocean and Benny Hill to proceedings on the blog today. Where else would you see that?

Some more great sporting action today, with Australians particularly shining in the pool and Veldodrome. More success for Scotland in judo and England in triathlon, but good to see some other nation's succeeding with two Welsh victories today amid gongs for Cyprus, Malaysia and South Africa. And a first medal for the Isle of Man.

Another day another gold as they will probably be saying in Australian swimming circles as green and gold emerge here from the Tollcross International Swimming Centre with another batch of Commonwealth titles. While no world records were broken, four Games records were set including the two for Australia in the form of its women's 4x200m freestyle team and Emily Seebohm who retained her 100m backstroke crown. Meanwhile England's two gold medals also came via record times as Francesca Halsall won her second Commonwealth Games gold in the 50m freestyle to sit only second to the great Karen Pickering in terms of English swimming success at the Games while Adam Peaty powered to an impressive win in the 100m breaststroke.

22:23 Over in the squash, James Willstrop of England is through to the semi-finals after easing past Ivan Yuen of Malaysia, 11-1 11-7, 11-3. Better fortunes for Malaysia in table tennis though as their women qualified to face hot favourites Singapore in the gold medal match tomorrow. Singapore won the 2010 world team title over China, and that is quite something in table tennis, so they will take some beating.

Australia will face India for bronze while, in the men's event we are a round behind. It's England v India and Singapore v Nigeria in the two semi-finals tomorrow.

22:20 South Africa are 15-0 up against Kenya in the final rugby sevens match of the day. They are heading for a quarter-final against Scotland. England will face Samoa, Wales will have the daunting prospect of taking on New Zealand in two of the other last eight contests, while Australia's reward for edging England is set to be a match against the Kenyans.

England versus Samoa is probably the pick of those four matches.

22:14 Medals action for the day is now complete, but we will take you "around the grounds" for a final day before wrapping up for the day.

Action has been hotting up in the badminton team event. Malaysia have continued their good evening by qualifying to face Singapore in the first semi-final tomorrow. That will be following by England against India.

Australia beat England in rugby sevens

22:08 Sean McMahon, Jesse Parahi and Cameron Clark scored the three Australian tries as they eeked out a win in a high quality encounter. England had led 7-5 at half-time but conceded 10 unanswered points after the break.

22:06 Australia are leading 15-7 in the second half, so it's looking like déjà vu
in the second "Ashes" clash of the day.

22:02 It's been a long and thrilling day for the Ibrox crowd, with the last match seeing a superb 19-12 win for Samoa over Wales. Samoa have a strong sevens team and, along with maybe South Africa and the two teams currently playing, are the only ones who could realistically challenge New Zealand tomorrow.

21:56 The most anticipated match of the day is getting underway in the rugby sevens. England versus Australia.

The Aussies beat the English in a netball thriller to open proceedings on day three, so can the English close the night with revenge? England have enjoyed 57-0 and 40-0 victories over Sri Lanka and Uganda respectively so far, so are looking good.

"Scottish legend David Wilkie has made an appearance at the Tollcross Centre to present the medals in the men's 100m breaststroke.
Wilkie is a former world champion in the discipline while he is a former Olympic, Comonwealth and European champion in the 200m. So he knows a thing or two about the art of breaststroking.
He gets a fantastic reception from the crowd here and I suspect deep down he was secretly hoping to be planting the gold medal around Ross Murdoch's neck rather than Adam Peaty. Instead Murdoch makes do with bronze."

21:45 That results means another shift at the top of the medal table as Australia move back ahead of England.

21:39 Gold for Australia in the women's 4x200m freestyle!

Emma McKeon, Alicia Coutts, Brittany Elmslie and Bronte Barratt win the last gold medal of the night and another for the Aussies, this time in the women's 4X200m freestyle.

The result is also another Games record as they finished in 7:49:90 ahead of Canada and England.

21:35 Weightlifter Mohd Hafifi Mansor has claimed Malaysia's first gold medal of Glasgow 2014 with victory in the men's 69kg.

Mansor lifted a total of 305kg to beat his Nigerian rival Yinka Ayenuwa, who managed 301kg. India's Omkar Otari took the bronze with 296kg.

The 24-year-old Malaysian had finished third in New Delhi four years ago.

Victory means more than just gold for Mansor, however. It had been made clear to him before travelling here that anything other than a gold medal would mean financial support he receives to work with his coach Lukman Lukman in Indonesia would be cut.

He has criticised the lack of quality coaches in Malaysia in the past and began working with Indonesian coach Lukman in February 2014.

He admitted before the competition that the pressure was tough but a great motivator.

21:22 There was joy for the Ugandan team in their rugby sevens encounter with Sri Lanka at the Ibrox this evening as they came from 14-0 down to win 17-14.

The team piled into the crowd on the final whistle as sheer excitement streamed throughout the Stadium.

Peaty breaks Scottish hearts

19:17 England's Adam Peaty takes gold in the men's 100m breaststroke breaking his own Games record in the process with a time of 58:94 to finish ahead of Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa.

Meanwhile, Ross Murdoch could not repeat his heroics from Friday night as he has to settle for bronze but that does not stop him getting a deafening reception as he exits the pool.

21:13 That gold medal lifts Australia above England in the medal table. The two nations are split on gold and silvers but Australia edge the bronzes 19 to 13.

21:10 Gold medal number three for the Aussies as Emily Seebohm touches home in a Games record time of 59:37 to best her own time of 59:51 set earlier today to retain her 100m backstroke title.

20:54 Sri Lanka's Chinthana Vidanage, one of the favourites having won a silver in 2010, is already out of the weightlifting competition after failing with three lifts.

"I had no idea what happened," he admitted. "The preparations went well, the training went well, the warm-up went well. I just don't know. I guess it's just bad luck."

"We have just started the second phase of the men's 69kg weightlifting at the Clyde Auditorium. England's Christopher Freebury and New Zealand's Cody Cole have both successfully taken their first attempts in the clean and jerk. Early days yet, obviously, but to my untrained eye India's Omkar Otari, fifth at New Delhi four years ago, looks like the man to beat. I could be wrong, though."

20:49 The final medal table in the judo sees England top with six golds, four silver and three bronze; Scotland in second with six gold, two silver and five bronze; and South Africa in third with one gold, one silver and two bronze.

That's despite England failing to pick up a gold medal in the SECC this evening; an evening that saw Scotland claim three, South African claim one and Wales claim one.

20:45 It's all over at Ibrox Park and Barbados kept the final score against New Zealand to 59-0, which is lot less than many people were predicting.

"As the medal ceremony for the women's 50m freestyle takes place attention is slowly turning to the men's 100m breaststroke final which is set to get underway soon. There is a definite sense of anticipation wafting from the packed stands here as all Scottish eyes will be on 20-year-old Ross Murdoch who will be hoping for a repeat of his historic win on Friday night here when he took the 200m breaststroke gold ahead of hot favourite and Glasgow boy Michael Jamieson. The London 2012 silver medal is not in tonight's final but another Scot in the form of Craig Benson is along with England's Adam Peaty and South African Cameron van der Burgh who appear to be the main contenders for medals."

The hosts have won three of five gold medals on off inside the SECC this evening with Wales and South Africa taking the other two.

Clydegate update

20:26 With all our reporters otherwise engaged in covering sport at Glasgow 2014 this afternoon our managing director Sarah Bowron (see 16:00) has been out and about in the city centre to check whether the Clyde Trail QR problem had been solved, as Commonwealth Games organisers had claimed.

We can happily confirm that the problem indeed does appear to have been fixed. The children of Glasgow can thank us later.

The Scot took down South Africa's Ruan Snyman for the win, while bronze went to Australia's Jake Andrewartha and Welshman Mark Shaw.

Euan Burton, of course, was the Flagbearer for Scotland at these Games having come out of retirement to fight, and win, in the men's under 100kg competition.

"After the excitement of Zoe Smith's gold medal in the women's 58kg category, it's the turn of the 69kg men in the weightlifting. Once you have negotiated your way to the press seats in the strangely shaped building that, from the outside, resembles an Armadillo, you are greeted by a sea of colour and an auditorium that appears to be populated with a knowledgeable crowd with plenty of support for all the competitors. There is an eclectic range of music being played between lifts ranging from Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" to Yakety Sax, better known as the theme music of The Benny Hill Show. Wonder if we will hear any Billy Ocean during the night (see 13:54 and 19:00)?"

The night is starting to have a familiar tone to last night as Taylor McKeown bags a second gold medal for Australia as she romps home almost a second ahead of compatriot Sally Hunter in the 200m breaststroke.

The Scot beat England's Jodie Myers in the women's over 78kg competition by a single yuko score.

India's Rajwinder Kaur and Sachini Wewita Widanalage of Mauritius took the bronze medals.

The Aussie put in a superb swim to take the win ahead of Thomas Hamer of England and Welshman Jack Thomas.

Gold rush for cake makers

19:35 A Scottish cake company has already struck gold at Glasgow 2014 after seeing sales of its most popular product soar.

Participants in the Opening Ceremony at Celtic Park wore costumes in the distinctive shape of Tunnock's Teacakes and since then sales of the chocolate-covered marshmallow biscuit have risen by more than 50 per cent since Wednesday.

By our reckoning, Scottish dentists should be looking forward to a similar-sized boost in the coming months.

19:30 An absolute avalanche of medals across the judo, swimming and cycling there.

It was, however, the final event on the track so things may be starting to settle down on the medal front.

Halsall sets a Games record on her way to taking the 50m freestyle gold touching home in a time of 23:96 ahead of the Campbell sisters from Australia with Cate second and Bronte third.

He wins the final sprint as well for good measure to give himself a grad total of 96 point.

Kennaugh finishes second for the Isle of Man, he was their big hope in the absense of Mark Cavendish and he has duly delivered their first medal of the Games.

19:17 Gold for le Clos!

Reigning Olympic, world and Commonwealth Games champion Chad le Clos shows that he really is the man in the 200m butterfly as he powers to victory here and breaks his own Games record with a time of 1:55:07.

Australia's Grant Irvine was second while another South African Sebastien Rousseau takes bronze.

19:15 The lids been lifted off the SECC as Euan Burton wins judo gold for Scotland in the men's under 100kg category.

The Scot beat Pakistan's Shah Hussain Shah in the gold medal final with an ippon after just two minutes.

There was double bronze success for New Zealand in this contest as Jason Koster and Tim Slyfield battled their matches.

"In the last Commonwealth Games she [Sayyed] had the gold and I got silver, so this time it's the other way around and it's even nicer that both the medals went to India. The approach of India to shooting has changed - we have Olympic medals as well as Commonwealth medals. We train in better venues, [have] good coaches and I think that reflects in our shooting."

19:06 David Luckman and Parag Patel has claimed England's first shooting gold medal of Glasgow 2014 in an event interrupted by the weather.

The pair of 38-year-olds led from the very first shot of the competition which involves competitors firing full bore rifles at targets of distances up to 1,000 yards away.

Torrential rain threatened to disrupt the event again after it had to finish early last night because of fog.

In the last round there were big names in the medal position as Canada's Jim Paton and Des Vamplew moved into second place while Scotland grabbed another medal, Ian Shaw and Angus McLeod taking bronze.

19:02 England are looking good in the rugby sevens too. They have just beaten Uganda 40-0, their second victory without conceding a point.

I expect things will be a bit harder in the next match against Australia which gets underway at 21:48.

19:00 The second session of the day in the rugby sevens at Ibrox Park is well underway with the highlight so far being Scotland's 56-0 win over Barbados, whose squad includes Anthony Bayne-Charles, the 31-year-old son of legendary British singer Billy Ocean (see 13:54).

Doesn't look like Billy will be reworking "Caribbean Queen" to make it "Caribbean Kings"...

"So here we are again for the third night of swimming finals action at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre. There are eight more finals to be decided this evening and once again it is a packed house here with plenty of Scottish and English flags visible with the odd smattering of Australia, South Africa and Wales."

18:52 Just to update those of you who keep hitting refresh on your computers to find out what's happening in the Queen's Prize Pairs Final, which was anticipated to end a while ago.

It remains ongoing with England's David Luckman and Parag Patel out ahead of Australia's James Corbett and Geoff Grenfell and Jersey's Barry le Cheminat and Dan Richardson.

We're not sure when it is predicted to finish but we are doing our best to find out.

But the key aim is to "take a lap" on the rest of the field, something which gets you 20 points. Tom Scully of New Zealand leads with 31 points ahead of compatriot Aaron Gate at the moment."

18:40 We can't be gone for long though as its gold for Natalie Powell in the judo!

In an under 78kg encounter that went right to the wire it was the Welsh wizard that eventually took the glory with a waza-ari the difference between the two competitors.

Despite her earlier confidence, that leaves Gemma Gibbons to settle for the silver.

The previous bronze medal finals saw Cameroon's Hortense Mballa Atangana and Canada's Ana Laura Portuondo prove victorious.

"Flower of Scotland reverberates around the arena once again as Neil Fachie and Craig MacLean's tander victory earlier on is recognised.
Pilot MacLean has now won medals in Olympics, Paralympics and both able-bodied and disability events at the Commonwealth Games. Not many people can claim that.
Interestingly, the silver and bronze medals for Australia in the same event meant they became the first country to win 200 medals in all cycling disciplines at the Commonwealth Games. They have won 76 gold, 54 silver and 29 bronze mdals on the track, along with a total of 40 medals in road events and a solitary bronze in mountain biking."

18:28 That gold medal for Zack Piontek proved 10th time lucky for any nation other than England and Scotland with each of the previous nine falling to athletes from these two nations.

18:15 India have won another gold medal in the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre.

Rahi Sarnboat took the women's 25m pistol event ahead of team-mate Anisa Sayyed took silver with Australia's Lalita Yauhleuskaya claiming bronze.

That's seven medals for India now in the shooting, three gold and four bronze.

18:13 Scott Sunderland of Australia wins the men's 1,000m time trial with a Games record time of 1:00.675.

The man he raced in the final heat, Simon van Velthooven of New Zealand, takes silver, while fellow Kiwi Matthew Archibald has to be content with bronze

Disappointment for the English due of two-time Olympic team pursuit champion Ed Clancy, and Kian Emadi, who only finish 4th and 5th respectively.

Rugby Sevens at Rio 2016

18:10 Following the first day of action in the rugby sevens competition today, International Rugby Board chairman Bernard Lapasset and IRB chief executive Brett Gosper spoke at a media briefing at Ibrox Stadium about rugby sevens at Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Both men stressed the need for rugby sevens to make as big an impact as possible when it makes it's Olympic debut in Rio revealing that there are plans to stretch competition over six or seven days in order to maximise visibility and impact.

"For the Olympics, with the 12 women's and the 12 men's teams we are trying to stay as visible as possible we are so we are looking to stretch the format. It's not settled yet at this point and we are looking at a number of models that would probably keep us within Olympiv viewing for about six or seven days. We may have the women's [competition] and then the men's [competition] but these are all in discussion just now. There is a lot of benefit from exploiting visibility of the sport over the as long a period as we can."

Scotland going judoka crazy for Renicks sisters

17:50 While Paul Osborne is just hot-footing to the last night of the judo where Scottish-English husband and wife team Euan Burton and Gemma Gibbons will both be hoping to emerge victorious Kimberley and Louise Renicks, both winners of gold medals on the first day of the Games, were joined by silver medal winner Stephanie Inglis and bronze medallist Connie Ramsay to sign autographs at the Glasgow 2014 Superstore in George Square. As you can see, they got quite a reaction.

"I'm so overwhelmed and excited and have never seen Glasgow like this - everyone is so happy and proud for us," said Kimberley Renicks. Big sister Louise added: "It's just been unbelievable we have never had so much attention. It's not sunk in really as I haven't shown my mum and dad my medal yet."

Hannah McMillan, 13, from Glasgow, who met the champions said: "It was wonderful to watch the sisters win on the TV and now I have met them and held their medal. It's truly fantastic."

There's no change on the podium below her either as Ndidi Winifred of Nigeria takes the silver and Michaela Breeze settles for bronze.

17:28 Gold for Neil Fachie and pilot Craig MacLean in the tandem sprint. They lost the first race in the best of three contest against Australian Keirin Modra, but fought back in the second. And despite trailing by some distance early on in the third, fought back to win and claim their second gold of the Games.

Australia's Paul Kennedy had already sealed the bronze in this contest after beating Welshman Matthew Ellis in straight races.

Bruce Jones, 75, who won bronze alongside fellow Aussie Joy Forster in the B2/B3 mixed pairs competition, became the first athlete over 70 to win a Commonwealth Games medal since Manchester 2002, when Ruth Small of England won gold in visually impaired lawn bowls women's singles aged 70.

After the bus lost power again, and the calls of the exasperated driver back to base went unanswered, two groups of journalists, including myself, decided to make our own way. Of course, as soon as we got off the bus started moving again, but for how long I cannot answer. But for us a cab was flagged down and we got here soon enough, and just in time for the opening race of the tandem sprint. Believe it or not, this is my first time in a Velodrome, and the first thing that strikes me is how steep the track is, compared with how it looks on television."

Warm words on the rugby sevens

"A sea of empty blue seats and the sight of sprinklers whirring jets of water across the Ibrox playing surface signal the end of the first rugby sevens session at Glasgow 2014. And what a feast of power, speed and skill we have seen here. The stadium was packed and the atmosphere has been genuinely superb. The crowd has been getting behind the underdogs in every game so far, urging them on to the try-line and cheering every tackle or line-break. Uganda, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago have been particular crowd favourites with chants of "Uganda, Uganda" echoing around the stadium during their game with Australia. But alas, as is always the case, the cream rises to the top, and the big boys of New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and England have all registered comfortable wins. However, the All Blacks were pushed all the way in their second game against hosts Scotland, who came very close to inflicting a first defeat on the New Zealanders since the Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998. The Scots were within three points as the final minute ticked by and were up against a depleted New Zealand who had two players sin-binned but they could not get by the mighty All Black defence. The hosts are first out in this evening's session against Barbados while England versus Australia could be the stand out match so far."

Yates slams Welsh doping failures

- Matthew Yates, winner of a Commonwealth Games 800m bronze medal at Auckland 1990, was an uncompromising character as an athlete and retirement does not seem to have softened him. He has no sympathy with Rhys Williams and Gareth Warburton, the Welsh athletes forced out of the Commonwealth Games after testing positive for drugs they are blaming on a contaminated supplement.

15:00 Bolt gets up to leave only to return a few seconds later. The microphone is switched back on. What can he possibly have to say? He seems to want to complain about the fact his various titles honorary titles have not been included on his name plate on the table for the press conference. Mandy Keegan, director of press operations at Glasgow 2014, promises to correct it for next time.

Bolt briefly comes to the front of the stage afterwards but quickly decides to draw back as he is mobbed by journalists wanting to take "selfies" with him...

So close for Scotland at Ibrox

What a finish at Ibrox as Scotland, roared on by a capacity crowd, almost come from behind to upset the All Blacks. New Zealand had taken a 17-0 halftime lead but inexplicably seemed to lose their discipline as Gillies Kaka and Tim Mikkelson were both sin-binned.
That fired up the crowd even more and Lee Jones crossed the line twice as the defending champions were rocked but they held on only just to win 17-14.
Meanwhile, two tries each for Philip Burgess, Daniel Norton, Tom Mitchell and James Rodwell helped England to an opening match win over Malaysia while a hat-trick from Seabelo Senatla saw South Africa secure a comfortable 36-0 victory against Trinidad and Tobago.
Greg Jeloudev bagged four tries in Australia's 43-5 win over Uganda.
